2017 By-Elections

In the November 2017 by-elections of the Metsimaholo Local Municipality, the ANC won 16 seats (19 seats in 2016 LGE); DA 11 seats (12 in 2016), EFF 8 seats (8 in 2016), & SACP 3 seats. 1 seat each won by AIC, Forum for Service Delivery, Metsimaholo Community Association (2 in 2016), & VFPlus (1 in 2016).

 2016 Local Government Elections

The Metsimaholo Local Municipality had 42 seats the 2016 local government elections. There were 79,675 registered voters in the local municipality. The highest voter turn-out was achieved in Ward 14 with 76.38 %. The lowest voter turn-out in the municipality was in Ward 19 with 42.86 %. The average voter turn-out achieved in the 2016 municipal elections was 57.56 %.  Following the 2016 local government elections, the seat allocation in the Metsimaholo Council was as follows;

  • African National Congress – 19 seats
  • Democratic Alliance – 12 seats
  • Economic Freedom Fighters – 8 seats
  • Metsimaholo Community Association – 2 seats
  • Freedom Front Plus – 1 seat

 2011 Local Government Elections

The Metsimaholo Local Municipality has 42 seats. There were 72,068 registered voters in the local municipality for the 2011 local government elections. The highest voter turn-out was achieved in Ward 14 with 69.12 %. The lowest voter turn-out in the municipality was in Ward 9 with 43.54 %. The average voter turn-out achieved in the 2011 municipal elections was 54.69 %.

Following the 2011 municipal elections, three political parties are represented in the municipality. The African National Congress was returned as the majority party with 26 seats. The Democratic Alliance holds 15 seats and the Freedom Front Plus holds 1 seat. The United Democratic Movement (UDM) and the United Independent Front (UIF) lost the seats the parties held following the 2006 local government elections.
